On Thursday, March 3, 2022, around 1:30 a.m., officials reported three individuals were killed in a sequence of incidents involving 17 cars on a section of Interstate 95 in Florida in which visibility was extremely low due to fog and smoke from vegetation-controlled burns. According to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Kim Montes, the collisions began south of Daytona Beach. She stated there were four distinct incidents on the northbound side involving 11 automobiles, and one crash on the southbound side involving six vehicles. A traffic camera filmed a tractor trailer that was engulfed in flames and exploded, sending flames and smoke aloft. An automobile was crushed beneath the front of a tractor trailer, according to other footage from the area. Interstate 95, which runs from South Florida to Maine, is the principal north-south highway route along the United States’ East Coast. The smoke from nearby controlled burns lingered, and the National Weather Service had issued a dense fog alert for coastal Volusia County near Edgewater, warning of extremely limited visibility on Twitter. Such situations can be disconcerting for drivers going at motorway speeds on the freeway. According to Montes, two of the dead were driving south, while the third perished in a northbound accident. Multiple people were brought to a Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, and a youngster who was evacuated to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children was in stable condition.
